This prompt was difficult for me. It was to write a reaction to a painting, sculpture or any artwork. It’s called an ekphrastic poem. I wrote one in college about Van Gogh’s Shoes. That poem was easier because I was assigned the painting, and I had a week to write something. Today I had no preassigned painting and only one day to write something. There were no instructions for poetic form so I chose a sort of free verse with a repeating line.
The painting I chose is Against the Wind by Liz Lemon Swindle. Follow the link below to see the painting:

The Scripture passage is Matthew 14:22-32.
Against the Wind and Waves by Alissa Dedic
Against the wind and waves
a little boat bobs
Against the wind and waves
All aboard think a ghost walks on water
Against the wind and waves
A familiar voice cries,
“Be brave! It’s me!”
Against the wind and waves
Peter asks to come to Jesus
Against the wind and waves
Jesus beckons
Against the wind and waves
Peter’s eyes stray
Against the wind and waves
He can’t walk, can’t stand, only sinks
Against the wind and waves
Jesus takes the sinking man’s hand
Against the wind and waves
Jesus walks Peter to safety
Against the wind and waves
Jesus grows our faith.
